Nuorgam – The EU's Northernmost Village
Nuorgam is Finland's and the EU's northernmost village, located 500 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle. Here, beside the flowing Teno River and the fells, Nights of Northern Lights offers high-quality accommodation and beautiful scenery in the heart of the Arctic nature. From Nuorgam, there are excellent opportunities for day trips to Norway and the Arctic Ocean coast, and the village organizes ice fishing trips to the fells and other winter activities. A holiday can be spent actively moving, relaxing in a warm bath, and admiring the Northern Lights.
**Pulmankijärvi Lake**
Pulmankijärvi is Finland's northernmost lake, formed from an ancient Arctic Ocean fjord, and stretches over 10 kilometers in length. Pulmankijärvi can be reached by car along the Pulmankijärvi road, winding through a magnificent fell plateau. The lake is home to freshwater flounder, and its vegetation includes rare bog heather. Pulmankijärvi and its river valley, with their stunning landscapes, offer ideal terrain for hiking and skiing.
**Kaldoaivi Wilderness Area**
Kaldoaivi is Finland's largest wilderness area, extending into Norway as a roadless fell wilderness. The landscapes vary from steep river valleys to gentle fells, and the terrain is largely treeless uplands and fell birch forests. The area is suitable for experienced hikers and especially for fishermen due to its fish-rich fell streams and pools.
**Teno River**
Teno or Tenojoki is the border river between Finland and Norway. It is famous for its salmon fishing, being also one of Northern Europe's largest natural salmon rivers. The Teno River's clear water and sandy beaches also invite swimmers to cool off during summer heatwaves. Historically, the river has served as a thoroughfare for people living on both banks, rather than a border. Bonds of friendship and kinship have long traditions, and the local people have cooperatively engaged in reindeer herding, traditional fishing methods, and salmon fishing in the river.
**Sevetti-Pulmanki Hiking Trail**
The Sevettijärvi – Pulmanki hiking trail, starting from Pulmankijärvi, runs through the vast Kaldoaivi wilderness area. The length of the trail is 60-70 kilometers, depending on the chosen route. At its southern end, the trail still passes through pine heathlands, but as one travels north, the surrounding fell plateau becomes progressively more barren and primarily birch-growing. Mountain bikers can also use the same trail. There is also a winter trail between Sevettijärvi and Pulmanki, which is approximately 70 kilometers long.
AURORA COTTAGE
Exceptional accommodation in Nuorgam, where comfort meets the stunning scenery.
Cosy cottage accommodation in Nuorgam
Aurora cottage is located right on the banks of the River Teno and it’s one of the few destinations in the Nuorgam area with a jacuzzi on its own terrace. The location of the cottage is ideal as it is a short distance away from the center of Nuorgam and the Norwegian border, still maintaining its own privacy by the river.
In winter you can admire the beautiful river and mountain scenery as well as the northern lights from the large windows of the cottage or from the jacuzzi. In summer you can easily fish right in front of the cottage. A wood-heated sauna is included and there is also a cozy fireplace in the cabin. The cottage has a well-equipped kitchen, or you can barbeque delicious meals on the grill on the terrace instead.
The cottage has one double bed and a convertible sofa bed, altogether it has places to sleep for 4 people. Laundry facilities, sauna, the use of the jacuzzi and firewood are included.
Nuorgam is one of the best places to chase the Northern Lights. We have zero light pollution, and because of the cold weather there are seldom clouds. This makes it possible to see the Northern Lights during 60–70% of the winter nights.
