Hartaansilta: Oulu's New Landmark Bridge Invites Explorers to the Embrace of the River
Oulu's cityscape has gained a stunning new landmark with the completion of Hartaansilta, a pedestrian and cycling bridge connecting Tuira and Hietasaari. This 170-meter bridge is more than just a thoroughfare; it's a work of art that merges urban life with the tranquility of nature, inviting visitors to enjoy the beauty of the Oulujoki River delta.**
Hartaansilta, whose winning design competition entry was named "Siivenkantama" (Wing Span), is a two-span steel arch bridge. Its light, bird-like form seems to have been sculpted specifically for the Oulujoki River delta landscape, simultaneously serving as a distinctive symbol for the new Hartaanselänranta residential area. The bridge seamlessly connects the districts of Lipporanta and Vaakunakylä, offering new routes and recreational opportunities for both locals and tourists.
The bridge's strategic location fully utilizes the river delta and its extensive recreational routes. It enables smooth movement within nature, whether for a leisurely stroll, an invigorating bike ride, or birdwatching along the riverbanks.
Light and Life during the Culture Capital Year 2026*
Hartaansilta will become particularly spectacular during Oulu's European Capital of Culture year in 2026. The bridge's LED lighting will create a magnificent and dynamic light show after dark, highlighting its architectural beauty and making it an even more attractive evening destination. This lighting will be a significant part of Oulu's cultural year events and visual identity.
Behind the bridge is a multidisciplinary design team led by Insinööritoimisto Pontek Oy, which won the 2021 design competition with a unanimous decision from the jury. In addition to Pontek, the "Siivenkantama" design team included architectural firm Ylitys Oy, landscape architecture firm Maanlumo Oy, lighting design by VALOA design Oy, and geotechnical engineering by Profund Oy.
Construction of Hartaansilta began in summer 2023, and the bridge was completed just in time for the summer 2025 Housing Fair (Asuntomessut) event, allowing numerous fair visitors to experience this new landmark.
**Hartaansilta is now ready to welcome both local residents and tourists to enjoy the beauty of the Oulujoki River and its new, unique routes. Come and experience Oulu's newest gem, and let "Siivenkantama" lead you to new adventures!**
